Olweus Bullying Prevention Program

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program includes school-wide and classroom-level activities, individual interventions with bullies and victims and community involvement. This violence prevention program coOlweus Bullying Prevention Program logombines the efforts of all school staff (administrators, teachers, counselors, aides, cafeteria workers, custodians, and bus drivers) as well as students, parents and members of the community to reduce bullying behavior.

Family Services trains a Coordinating Committee at the school who in turn trains the entire staff and implements the program. Family Services remains involved as consultants for up to two years.

This program, developed by Dr. Dan Olweus, was part of a nationwide campaign addressing bullying behavior in Norway in the 1970s. In the early 1990s, in response to the increase in school violence in the United States, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado chose the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program as one of the “Blueprint” programs they described as “truly outstanding” and effective. The program now has certified trainers throughout the country.
